1. Introduction
SSME is a new interdisciplinary field that combines the knwoledge of science, engineering and management to improve services. These different types of knowledge are absolutely essential for the success of organizations in the so-called service- and knowledge-based economies.
At present, services are predominant in the more developed economies (both in terms of contribution to employment as well as in terms of contribution to the product). A wide range of services is increasingly more technology-intensive and more demanding as regards skills and qualifications. |
Large corporations are therefore asking Universities that they adapt their education and training to this new reality.
The ULHT aims to be at the forefront of this process in Portugal. It is therefore committed to developing this new field of multidisciplinary knowledge not only in terms of teaching but also of research.
The main goals of the new MBA in SERVICES SCIENCES, MANAGEMENT AND ENGINEERING (SSME) are:
- to provide methods for scientifically analysing services;
- to efficiently manage services;
- to maximize service productivity;
- to solve problems resulting from service features with a view to improving its productivity;
- to explore a new conceptual framework for systematically developing innovation.

Strategy in an information and services economy (20 hrs):
- Concepts.
- Strategic formulation and decisions.

Marketing of services (20 hrs):
- Marketing in the 21st century.
- Consumer satisfaction.
- Marketing planning.
- Marketing strategy.
- Characteristics of services and their implications in the practice of marketing management.

Accounting for services and knowledge (30 hrs):
- Accounting principles.
- National and international accounting norms.
- Classes of financial demonstrations.
- Analysis of financial demonstrations.

Finance for services and knowledge (30 hrs):
- Financial information.
- Financial analysis.
- Companies’ financial structure.

Logistics/production (30 hrs):
- Characterization of distributions channels.
- Design and development of distribution channels.

Mathematical methods (20 hrs)
- Statistical concepts.
- Prediction methods.
- Managing the prediction process.
ICT Techniques / Business Intelligence (25 hrs):
- Introduction to information systems.
- Types of information system.
- Managing information systems in the services area.
- Business Intelligence: on-line consumer profile; e-market Research.
Web services / Architecture and design of IT service systems (25 hrs):
- State-of-the- art in the area of overall system design for efficient web services.
- Customer service requirements in terms of throughput, availability, power and cost.
- Development of web sites: 3W`s – Web design, Web promotion, Web performance.
Organizational behaviour (20 hrs):
- The nature of organizational behaviour (Total Quality Management).
- Motivation: Content and process theories.
- The group (Group structures and process; Decision-making; Leadership).
- The organization (Organizations’ structure and dynamics).
Intellectual property /legal environment in business (20 hrs):
- The legal environment of business.
- The new context of innovation and patent.
- Property protection in the services sector.
3. Assessment
Since we aim to encourage students to draw projects and do research in this area, assessment will consist in:
- a report (25%).
- a project (50%).
- a working paper (25%).
It is fundamental for the success of the course that students participate in 75 % of the modules of the study plan.
4. Schedule
This MBA has a duration of 290 Hours.
Classes (26 october 2007 / 27 june) take place on Fridays and Saturdays every 15 days, on the following schedule:
- Fridays: 2 pm to 11 pm with an hour break for dinner.
- Saturdays: 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm.
- At the beginning of the course the full schedule will be presented with the dates of all the sessions, which will not be altered so as to enable students to adequately manage their time.
5. Applicants
All those with university degree (BA or BA Honours) who wish to do research in this area.

7. Accreditation
This MBA will be integrated in the Applied Social Sciences Study and Research Unit ID - 462 FCT (Territory, Culture and Development Research Centre - TERCUD).
The internationalization of this program will be made through the cooperation and exchange of foreign teachers as well as students.
This program establishes very close relations with the industry in various areas. The first MBA underlines the fields of Tourism, Culture Services and Scientific Consultancy Services, where there already exists, at University level, a critical mass of teachers with a history of practical activity and research work.
When completed, this MBA confers 60 ECTS at 2nd Cycle level.
