THE OESTE REGION VIED BY THE “OESTEANS”: Results from the opinion survey among the development agents on the elements of territorial identity features in theOeste Region.
[in Portuguese]

Objectives

  • To develop a new conceptual-methodological framework for the study of territorial identity as a local and regional development resource;
  • To provide empirical evidence of the role of development stakeholders in consumption and reproduction of existing and formation of new features of territorial identity in the "Oeste" Region; and
  • To generate public and professional awareness on territorial identity as a key factor of competitive development.

Summary

The IDENTERRA Project is an attempt to bring forward a new conceptual and methodological framework for the study of territorial identities in the context of globalized economy and culture. The complex and ambiguous concept of territorial identity will be translated into an analytical category, equipped by methods and tools for identification, recording and assessment of its multifaceted features. This should enable empirical recording of the traditional and emerging, actual and perceived physical- and human-related identity features and, at the same time, of the interests, struggles and power relations among local and global development stakeholders. Such an analytical framework will be applied in pilot field studies in the "Oeste" Region of Portugal, where the issue of "competitive territorial identity" has been placed high on the development policy agenda. Ample empirical evidence will be sought about the role of development stakeholders in producing and consuming territorial identities of this Region.
