GEOGRAPHY OF IDENTITIES AND PLANNING

 OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the Research Area “Geography of Identities and Development” has been to conceptualize, implement and disseminate theoretical and applied policy- and planning-oriented research in the area of territorial identity and local/regional development, within the local/global nexus (see national and international projects).

The specific research objectives have been:

1. to develop and test innovative theoretical frameworks and models for the study of territorial identity as a local/regional development resource; and
2. to provide empirical evidence about the role of development stakeholders in the (re)production and/or (re)valorization of territorial identity in specific cultural and geographic settings.

As a working definition in theoretical and applied research, "territorial identity" was conceived as sets of biophysical, cultural, economic and other specificities of places and regions (formal, functional and vernacular) that make them unique in relation to other, neighboring or distant ones, at all levels - from local to global. Likewise, "development stakeholders" has been conceived as individuals or groups of people and/or institutions that directly or indirectly stand to gain or lose given a particular development course or activity.

As regards dissemination, the objective has been to promote and strengthen activities such as:

- Publication of scientific articles, books and conference papers (see Publications).

- Organization of national and international scientific conferences, seminars and other events (see GeoForum, GeoWorkshop, PECSRL 2008 and Fieldtrips).

- Networking through active membership in international research and dissemination networks, as well as creation of on-line discussion fora (see Identerra Forum).

- To promote development of university education in Geography and Territorial Management (see B.A. Studies in Geography; and Master Studies in Geography).

In both research and dissemination, a particular importance has been given to the concerted promotion of international cooperation and integration, thus ensuring stability and continuity of international relevance of this Group and of TERCUD as a whole.
